Do you Have Eyes of the World? (Ezekiel 7-13)

Look around and what do you see? Do you see lavish houses, kids dressed to the nines, malls brimming with useless ‘stuff’ to fill your houses with? Do you dream about having that lifestyle? Having eyes of the world is one area our vision needs redirection from.

The book of Ezekiel provides a broader focus for us to set our sights on. We are in this world, but do not need to have eyes of the world.

There is more out there than meets the eye.

Eyes to see...

In the book of Ezekiel, we are told for the second time about a vision including the glory of the Lord and the cherubim guided by the spirit of the living creatures.

We learn even more about these majestic creatures in chapter 10 that wasn’t yet revealed in the first chapter.

And their whole body, and their backs, and their hands, and their wings, and the wheels, were full of eyes round about, even the wheels that they four had.

Can you honestly imagine what it would be like to see them?

Eyes covering their backs, hands, wings, and the wheels. Eyes all over the place.

These are not eyes of ‘the world’…. I mean, maybe they look like our eyes, but this is just one more example where the things of this world are a partial reality of what is in Heaven. I mean, even the tabernacle represented the temple which represents how Heaven is depicted in Revelation.

Here, we are given a majestic vision of the cherubim, wings touching, with God above them. Similarly, we can look back to the imagery of the ark of the covenant to see a similar display, all planned by God. There are no coincidences.

And you shall make two cherubim of gold; of hammered work shall you make them, on the two ends of the mercy seat. Make one cherub on the one end, and one cherub on the other end. Of one piece with the mercy seat shall you make the cherubim on its two ends. The cherubim shall spread out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings, their faces one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubim be. And you shall put the mercy seat on the top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony that I shall give you. There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, I will speak with you about all that I will give you in commandment for the people of Israel.

Worldly view offers glimpses...

The Bible continually relays that the things of this earth have no comparison to what is to come. Yet, we do have small concepts and items that we are given to give us a frame of reference for our minds to somewhat picture the magnitude of Heaven.

Consider our bodies… we have a head, eyes, hands. Yet, angels who were made before we were created have those features also… in very different ways!

  • Four faces, and one is human….
  • Eyes all over, not just two….
  • Hands beneath wings that fire/coals do not burn….

Oh, 'eye' see...

And we can’t forget that it’s even hard to define, with our eyes of the world, the radiance of the light surrounding the glory of God.

Jumping back to the correlations from the tabernacle, do you think now that the items in the tabernacle (ark, lampstands, bowls, tables, rings, altars, etc.) were merely covered in gold to show opulence? They showed a picture of the brilliance to come in an earthly way we could understand!

Consider this, the sun is so bright we cannot even look at it. Do we think the sun is the brightest thing we will ever see? Brighter than it’s Creator?

As I looked, behold, a stormy wind came out of the north, and a great cloud, with brightness around it, and fire flashing forth continually, and in the midst of the fire, as it were gleaming metal.
As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, like the appearance of torches moving to and fro among the living creatures. And the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. And the living creatures darted to and fro, like the appearance of a flash of lightning. ... As for the appearance of the wheels and their construction: their appearance was like the gleaming of beryl.
Over the heads of the living creatures there was the likeness of an expanse, shining like awe-inspiring crystal, spread out above their heads. ... And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire; and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance. And upward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were gleaming metal, like the appearance of fire enclosed all around. And downward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was brightness around him. Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking.

We just have no idea how holy God really is. This ought to give us pause to consider every aspect of creation and our lives.

Eyes of the world...

We just have no idea how holy God really is. This ought to give us pause to consider every aspect of creation and our lives.

Stop looking through eyes of the world, and put on the sunglasses so we can see the true light in every facet of our lives!

I mean, the gems that Ezekiel names are not even identifiable. How much more so are our eyes limited? The Bible speaks of such a place so far beyond our comprehension, do we consider that our eyes of the world are limited even by color?

Did you know that humans have red, green, and blue cones in our eyes that all work together to form the shades and colors we see? Did you also know that birds have those three AND ultraviolet cones? What about butterflies… with their FIFTEEN different types of photoreceptors?

All of creation points to God… whether or not we choose to see it. Our eyes of the world are literally limiting us unless we choose to use a lens in which we see God in everything!

Do you Have Eyes of the World? (Ezekiel 7-13)

Do you have eyes of the world?

How are you, Christian, choosing to see the world around you?

The book of Ezekiel is filled with prophecies, destruction, and odd directions from God for Ezekiel to act out as an example to the Israelites.

But it also provides some of the most detailed visions of the glory of God.

This in itself is a great example to look at when considering our lives in relation to the Bible.

We go through weird circumstances here on earth, not fully understanding how they fit into God’s design. But if we go forward through these, not with eyes of the world, seeing them as mere oddities, we then see them in line with the holiness of God: His divine plan, His purposes, and our ultimate good.

Our trials, upsets, challenges, and mercies all have deep purpose behind them because we are being formed to see past our physical surroundings to what is to come. If you only have eyes of the world, your earthly existence will be flat.

The glory of God comes alive when we see our lives through glasses that improve our eyes of the world.

  1. Hi there, I really enjoyed your post. I am currently making my way through Ezekiel and although alot of it is tough for me to understand, much of it is very beautiful. Makes one long for heaven. I too want eyes to see. I’ve been praying lately in that vein. I want to see what only the Lord can show me. However, what I can see, I want to appreciate too. Great post, I’ve linked up, God bless
