Insecure Moses Requests Relief (Genesis 50 – Exodus 6)

Have you ever felt the Lord’s leading in an area you feel completely inept in? The pull to do what you are called to versus your personality — the sharp difference can be debilitating.

For Moses, that was just the case. If he were alive today, he might very well have told God that his enneagram did not match God’s calling for him.

There are many, many ways in which we can all default to our "personality" as an excuse to either do or not do what the Bible clearly lays out as defining measures of our faith. Click To Tweet

It is not okay to limit our willingness to obey by telling God He made us incapable.

Multiple times, Moses boldly expresses his fears. He is scared to speak to people, yet not afraid to beg God to choose someone else.

“Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?”

Exodus 3:11

But Moses said to the Lord, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue. ” Then the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.” But he said, “Oh, my Lord, please send someone else.”

Exodus 4:10-13, emphasis added

God takes the time to comfort him, saying that He will be with him. Then, when insecure Moses further claims his incompetencies, God:

  • tells Moses He will provide him with the words to say,
  • that he will worship Him on the same mountain after he is done,
  • provides specific instructions on what to do and who to say things to,
  • shares that they will not leave empty-handed,
  • gifted him three signs to show the people and Pharaoh that God was behind him,
  • reminds Moses who created him and that the same Creator has the power to help and teach him what to say,
  • eventually sends Aaron as a placeholder to speak,
  • confirms that the men who did want to kill him were dead, and
  • warns Moses that Pharaoh will have a hard heart and will not listen right away.

Some of the biggest takeaways here are seeing that God promises multiple times that He will teach him, He puts people in his life to accomplish what needs to be done while Moses learns, God equips him, and Moses takes over to lead.

Rest assured, God will equip you, call you, qualify you, and teach you. Insecure Moses was incredibly scared to speak in public, yet he got to a point that he led an entire nation.

Don’t let what you see as a limitation become a stumbling block in your Biblical walk.

Instead, let the initial fear point you to how great God is, that He can help you overcome anything to share His glory with those around you.

  1. I appreciate that God was patient with Moses–and with Abraham, and with Job. It encourages me to express my doubts and insecurities to him rather than running elsewhere.
