Each and Every Morning Showers You With New Mercies (Jeremiah 50 - Lamentations 4)

Do you wake up each and every day understanding the depth of God’s compassion? Okay, ‘understand’ is too broad a term since our God’s wisdom is unfathomable… but the Bible shares multiple examples to help us get closer to a place of understanding.

His mercies really are new each and every morning, whether we acknowledge them or not.

It’s never too late to start!

The end of Jeremiah...

The book of Jeremiah closes out with final judgment on:
-the nations that God sent to overtake Israel;
-two kings who had similar starts, different reactions, and, subsequently, different captivities.

The closing out on the judgment ascribed to the nations brings about a tidy wrap-up to the book as it started with Jeremiah’s calling and ends with the prophesy against the nations.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.
Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me, “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth. See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.”

He was sent to foretell to the nations of what God would have come to pass.

Except it wasn’t just the other nations… much of Jeremiah’s calling included prophesying to his own nation.

The book closes with God’s perfect construction as it lays out that those who went against His chosen people would now have their day in court. Those nations were to be judged and destroyed because of their actions.

How on earth?!...

The book of Lamentations, while author not confirmed, most Jewish and Christian tradition ascribe it to Jeremiah.

In Lamentations, each chapter is its own lament, all done with similar and crossover poetic attributes.

The Hebrew title for this book is ‘ekah (‘eyk, ‘eykah), and when derived from it’s origins means “How!”

A statement of shock at the situation we are in can often bring about a stillness and peace that only God provides. Read these 3 verses with the original emphasis behind the ‘how’.

How lonely sits the city that was full of people!
How the Lord in His anger has set the daughter of Zion under a cloud!
How the gold has grown dim, how the pure gold is changed!

Lamenting the loss...

The punishment the Israelites faced was unbelievable. So shocking was the reality they were faced with after they had ignored Jeremiah’s warnings for so long shows they never truly believed God would punish them for their sins.

While completely predicted and forewarned, they chose instead to stand in opposition with hardened hearts, rebellious spirits, and prideful minds.

When repentance still would have saved them from this tragedy, they refused.

So here they sit wasting away as famine ravages the land, soldiers surround them, and slow deaths are agonizingly painful to watch.

Ugh… how, Lord!

The Helpful Lament...

I doubt anyone wants to experience tragedy. Yet, when they do, it can (and does) often point people back to God.

Jerusalem remembers in the days of her affliction and wandering all the precious things that were hers from days of old.

An analytical look back through what occurred has the ability for us to see a clearer picture. They say hindsight is 20/20… because it’s true!

It is much easier to calmly evaluate our lives after a significant trial instead of in the midst when our feelings and emotions threaten to influence decisions.

Full circle...

The foundations of these laments all point the reader back to a sovereign God. I am not sure it’s possible for us to fully grasp the true holiness and sovereignty our God possesses.

We just have no idea…

Yet, the sorrowful look here of the current situation helps bring us back around full circle.

  1. The Israelites began as a nation dedicated to God;
  2. they individually fell away and failed to generationally honor God;
  3. they eventually were punished;
  4. then they lamented; and
  5. finally the remnant began to turn back to God.
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning great is your faithfulness - Lamentations 3 22-23 - each and every morning

Each and Every Day...

When life throws curveballs at you, your focus often narrows to daily tasks. Instead of broad reasonings and dreams, a shift happens to concentrate on getting through each day.

When we take God’s love for granted, we err in keeping Him from our daily lives. It is in those daily interactions and moments where His Spirit comes alive in us!

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Our days on earth are but a breath… but our focus can so easily sway to worldly desires and dreams that this simple truth gets blown away without truly effecting our days.

Each and every day is a gift from the Lord. We don’t need to go through trials and tragedies to recognize the truth about His mercies, but most often it isn’t until we do that we fully grasp how great His mercies and faithfulness truly are!

The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him.

Each and every day, seek Him and Him alone with all your heart!
