Do You See God’s Sovereignty in Old Testament Studies?(Jeremiah 22-28)

Do You See God's Sovereignty in Old Testament Studies? (Jeremiah 22-28)

Do you see what I see? A star, a star….

Old Testament studies bring forth immense blessings as they unveil God’s true nature to us as readers. To those who seek Him by studying the whole Bible, we see His omnipotence (all powerful), omnipresence (He is everywhere), and omniscience (all-knowing) revealed. He is SOVEREIGN! (And there ain’t no one like Him!)

When God’s sovereignty is being revealed through Old Testament studies, it unpacks a whole new level of understanding when studying the New Testament. God is the star of each story, all Bible stories, and all of history. I mean, c’mon, He MADE the stars!

Have you trained yourself to recognize it?

His word matters...

Jeremiah risked his life on multiple occasions to speak the word of God without adding to it or taking away from it.

Thus says the Lord: Stand in the court of the Lord's house, and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the Lord all the words that I command you to speak to them; do not hold back a word.

When taking the time to do Old Testament studies, you find Jeremiah is similar to the other prophets called by God in that he rested in the promises of God in spite of worldly threats. God called him personally, promised to equip him, and ensured His protection.

If you had just been told by God to speak an ominous warning to your church, what response might they have? One like this?

The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord. And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, “You shall die!

Let us not forget, he originally responded to God’s calling with a cry of perceived inabilities.

God equipped him, even gave him the exact words to say at times.

In His name...

Old Testament studies build on each other; here it is done through words. For Jeremiah, God built on his insecurities about speaking, provided him the exact words to speak, and denounced those who claimed to speak in His name.

God’s sovereignty is not ours to lust after, even on a small scale. The priests and prophets of Jeremiah’s time wanted to elevate themselves and their mistaken high view they thought their words held. Their sins could be whitewashed if ‘God said so’, their prophesy of peace could give that (false) hope to someone desperate for good news, their worship of false gods could be overlooked if not mentioned by ‘God’s words’ to the prophets.

They sought to liken the people to themselves, not bring them to God or set them apart from the world as holy. And they dared do so in the name of God.

I did not send the prophets, yet they ran [with their message]; I did not speak to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in my council, then they would have proclaimed my words to my people, and they would have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their deeds.
Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, declares the Lord, who steal my words from one another. Behold, I am against the prophets, declares the Lord, who use their tongues and declare, ‘declares the Lord.’ Behold, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams, declares the Lord, and who tell them and lead my people astray by their lies and their recklessness, when I did not send them or charge them. So they do not profit this people at all, declares the Lord.

What an affront to God. We cannot mock God, yet mankind still tries.

Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord.

Old Testament studies...

Old Testament studies can bring about a clearer picture of God’s mercy. Just as the Old Testament stories build on each other, so does the whole Bible!

When going through Old Testament studies, take note of God’s gracious offers of second chances. He offers them multiple times to His people.

We often witness those He loves ignore Him, turn to idols made of wood, sacrifice their precious miracles (children) to false gods, brush off the offer, act as though He doesn’t see their sins, and overall put him way past second place in their lives. And He still offers them ANOTHER chance.

Old Testament Studies - In HIS name and for HIS glory

Now, while it can be rather easy for us to berate the Israelites as we read these stories, let’s not jump the gun on that quite yet. How true has that been in your own life? If people were to read your ‘story’, would they come to the same conclusion?

And there it is; it is when we come to this place of understanding that the Bible starts coming alive in brand new ways because we are recognizing that the God of the universe gives second chances solely out of love.

And it is HERE that we can then understand just how grand the gift was that He gave His only son to suffer and die a horrendous death so that we might be saved.

Do you live for HIS glory?

A motto that should fast to every area in our lives… why not grab a daily reminder to boast for Whom we live to please?

Soli deo Gloria!
