False Prophets Face Severe Judgment (Jeremiah 8-14)

False Prophets Face Severe Judgment (Jeremiah 8-14)

We look with favor on Isaiah, Jeremiah, and the lot of them. In their day, they were accused of being false prophets. And vice versa, they accused others of being false prophets.

In the end, the true prophets were known by all, in major part, because God was glorified through His direction in their lives.

Prophets of God...

Smack dab, in the middle of Jeremiah 14:14, we find out that all true prophets are sent by God, and that there are 2 different ways prophets are directed by God.

And the Lord said to me: “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.

We know from Biblical text that Isaiah and Jeremiah were both called directly by God. But think if you were in that time, would you believe Jeremiah’s words? If so, why?

What about the opposite voices of men who also called themselves prophets of God?

It’s easy for us to read and see what seems so obvious. Look at your current scenario in life, are you ignoring someone claiming the name of God who keeps seeking God’s glory to be lived out in this messed up world? Or is there one that speaks peace and blessings to come that you crave to hear more?

Cautious… be cautious! You could be held guilty for following a false prophet without doing your Biblical “due diligence”.

Who opposed him...

Jeremiah was called to a lonely life, and he still obeyed his calling and the direction God asked him to go. His life and body were given in full surrender to the will of the Lord.

He was HATED though.

Think about it, here was a nation that had completely turned away from God. How welcome do you think Jeremiah’s message was to them? ‘Hey guys, destruction is coming your way because you continually turned away from God living wicked lives. Now, He is about to turn His face away from you.’

They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return. I have paid attention and listened, but they have not spoken rightly; no man relents of his evil, saying, ‘What have I done?’ Everyone turns to his own course, like a horse plunging headlong into battle.
“How can you say, ‘We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us’? But behold, the lying pen of the scribes has made it into a lie. The wise men shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken; behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord, so what wisdom is in them?
Then the cities of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem will go and cry to the gods to whom they make offerings, but they cannot save them in the time of their trouble. For your gods have become as many as your cities, O Judah, and as many as the streets of Jerusalem are the altars you have set up to shame, altars to make offerings to Baal.

It doesn’t end there. The false prophets and priests were just as guilty. And according to the Bible were held to a higher standard of guilt… for daring to say they spoke for the Lord.

That is not a light-hearted offense.

Therefore I will give their wives to others and their fields to conquerors, because from the least to the greatest everyone is greedy for unjust gain; from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely. They have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace. Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed; they did not know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among the fallen; when I punish them, they shall be overthrown, says the Lord.

Peace and discrediting...

The false prophets of Jeremiah’s day were ‘tickling the ears’ of those who listened. The people wanted to hear peace was coming, that their lives would be easy, and that no judgment would come their way.

The false prophets dared claim it was God who provided them that information to pass on.

To ensure their message would continue to be received unchallenged, they tried to not only discredit Jeremiah, but they plotted his death. These were men from his hometown, and to top it off, it turns out that even his family was involved.

But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter. I did not know it was against me they devised schemes, saying, “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more.”
For even your brothers and the house of your father, even they have dealt treacherously with you; they are in full cry after you; do not believe them, though they speak friendly words to you.”

Judgment on False Prophets...

God had consequences planned for the Israelites. They had turned away and were now about to walk through desolate valleys. For the false prophets, they were called to destruction for daring to use the name of God without authority.

Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, and say, “Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, or you will die by our hand”—therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: “Behold, I will punish them. The young men shall die by the sword, their sons and their daughters shall die by famine, and none of them shall be left. For I will bring disaster upon the men of Anathoth, the year of their punishment.”

It is a very serious thing to call yourself a prophet of God, even more serious to claim your message comes from God (if it actually doesn’t).

Jumping back to Deuteronomy, we see the message God gave the Israelites about testing the truth of a prophesy.

But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.’ And if you say in your heart, ‘How may we know the word that the Lord has not spoken?’— when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him.

Not only that, but we are to use the Word of God to confirm a prophet’s message. If it does not align or points to a different Jesus (an idol), then you are not to listen to anything they say.

Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? declares the Lord. Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces? Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, declares the Lord, who steal my words from one another. Behold, I am against the prophets, declares the Lord, who use their tongues and declare, ‘declares the Lord.’ Behold, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams, declares the Lord, and who tell them and lead my people astray by their lies and their recklessness, when I did not send them or charge them. So they do not profit this people at all, declares the Lord.
False Prophets Face Severe Judgments

Be like a Berean to determine false prophets...

Keep in mind, the Israelites were not treated as though collective victimhood status could be claimed here. They were guilty if they followed a false prophet… and it turns out a majority of them did.

And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword, with none to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, and their daughters. For I will pour out their evil upon them.

The Israelites had their own share of blame to accept for their actions. God had warned them over and over to obey, even sending true prophets to warn them.

In the New Testament, we get this same picture of the Bereans confirming the truth of Paul’s message by going to the Scriptures. They wanted to be sure that what he said aligned with what God says.

Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

Over and over, we find that recurring theme… we are to challenge everything against the Truth, God’s Word.

Be like a Berean, and challenge EVERYTHING against the Word of the Lord.

Do you live for HIS glory?

A motto that should fast to every area in our lives… why not grab a daily reminder to boast for Whom we live to please?

Soli deo Gloria!
