YOLO meaning | You choose how to live your 1 best life now: easy or hard (Psalm 68-74)

Have you considered the differences present in the lives of non-believers versus that of believers? Purposes, goals, morals, etc. are all different and held to differing standards. YOLO meaning takes on an entirely different definition for each party.

The truth is, it can be overwhelming to consider the life you are called to as a Christian. Sometimes, it can effect a callous look over the fence causing seasons of jealousy for those with easy lives.

YOLO meaning is a surprisingly crucial element to how we view our Christian walk.

YOLO meaning…

You only live once. You have one life on this earth before you enter eternity. In eternity, you have 1 of 2 destinations that you will end up in that are determined by your life on earth.

The choices you make now have eternal consequences.

I implore you to consider the trajectory of your life. Are you living your life knowing that the trials, tribulations, and hardships on earth pale in comparison to the infinite glories of Heaven? If our mindset shifts to this, we provide an entirely new way of glorifying God in this life.

Temptations of jealousy…

But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

Psalm 73:2-3

It can raise serious contention in our hearts when we consider the journey we take versus the one the world takes. Unfortunately, it can be very easy to see that in general terms, the worldly suffer less, have greater outward prosperity, the least shares of troubles, and the greatest share of comforts. Moreso, they live without the fear of God.

How are we to reconcile the life they ‘get’ to live versus the one we are called to without comparison stealing our joy?

Is the life we are called to easy or hard? While prosperity preachers will claim worldly successes and an easy breezing through life, they are wrong. The Bible makes no such claim. Is it possible to be financially, physically, and spiritually fit as a Christian? Yes, but it is also rare. (See Matthew 19:16-30)

Christians are called to a higher standard where God being glorified trumps all.

The Psalmist’s point of view…

What does the Psalmist even mean? Read the description to understand the Psalmist’s heart.

For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?” Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches.

Psalm 73:4-12

The Psalmist was strongly tempted to envy the prosperity of the wicked; a common temptation, which has tried the graces of many saints. … The faith even of strong believers may be sorely shaken, and ready to fail. There are storms that will try the firmest anchors.

Matthew henry’s Concise commentary

Overcoming jealousy…

Jealousy does not need to reign in our hearts. When we recognize the seeds starting to grow, a new mindset approach is needed. A mindset where we consider them in light of Heaven. Are they winning at life? Maybe. Will they win in the end? …

But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end.

Psalm 73:16-17

While we do not ever truly know if a person has a deathbed repentance after living a life of continual sin, we do hear it is rare. We are told that we can know them by their fruits and in this way, we can aim to see people in light of Heaven. After all, there are only 2 destinations after our earthly deaths.

The life we live…

Eternal consequences can often be in the back of our minds as we busy our lives with daily tasks, chores, to-dos, assignments, responsibilities, etc. But let’s not let our busyness take away from our ultimate purpose: to give God glory.

We can work through the mundane with an eternal mindset. Likewise, we can treat all people with one as well.

The challenges we endure will sometimes drop us into an emotional valley we struggle to claw out of; but those are the times we must fight and cling to eternal truths.

Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Psalm 73:23-26

The YOLO meaning for non-Christians…

The YOLO meaning for a non-Christian is vastly different than that of a Christian. We are to think long term, a long race is before is, a hard fought battle for the ultimate victory.

Non-Christians think most often in the worldly here and now. How can I: make the most money, have a happy and carefree life, or live life to the fullest right now.

It is a rather bland outlook when you think about it as there is no greater purpose than oneself. But the end will determine our fate. Accepting of it or not, the end will produce 2 results: one will either go to Heaven or Hell. There is no in-between, no middle ground for “good” people, no nothingness. It is a reality that we all will one day face, but praise the Lord that as Christians we are aware of that now so we can aptly prepare for it!

For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.

Psalm 73:27

The trajectory of your life…

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.

Galatians 6:7

What is the trajectory of your one life? Are you willing to acknowledge that your faith and life are not in vain? The Psalmist was tempted to believe that, but when he remembered the truth, his attitude changed back to a Biblical thought process.

Nothing gives more [offense] to God’s children, than to say it is vain to serve God; for there is nothing more contrary to their universal experience. He prayed to God to make this matter plain to him; and he understood the wretched end of wicked people; even in the height of their prosperity they were but ripening for ruin.

MATTHEW HENRY’S CONCISE COMMENTARY

The prosperity sought after on earth is in vain; our desires should focus first on God. If they don’t, it may be time to reevaluate the trajectory of your life.
