Viruses are shutting down entire economies and infrastructures. People are acting inhumanely over toilet paper. Sometimes it helps to take a moment to remind yourself of the examples of God’s sovereignty that we see throughout the Bible.
Already in Exodus, we can see that:
- God spared Moses’ life,
- Moses was reared by his birth Mom even though he was adopted,
- Aaron’s staff becomes a snake and eats up the other staff-turned-snakes,
- He sent the 10 plagues,
- The Israelites were set apart in the last plagues, and
- Everything that was predicted to happen, did happen.

We can see the thread running throughout the book of Exodus in how the lives of everyone weaved together. We also see how some were raised up at a time when others were learning who God was, some were hard-hearted as others were being taught to follow Godly leaders. It is a beautiful picture to see the intertwining of individuals and groups of people to see how they all come together in this world.
As these next chapters lead us through the exodus from Egypt, we see an even bigger display of sovereignty over all things and people.
The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein.
Psalm 24:1, ESV
Keep this verse in mind as we see even more examples of God’s sovereignty:
- A pillar of cloud/fire big enough to divide the Israelites (600,000 men not including women and children) from the Egyptian army that led them day and night,
- A huge sea divided and restrained so that the nation of Israel passed on dry ground,
- The entire Egyptian army was destroyed when God released the waters,
- God turned bitter water into sweet water,
- Daily provisions of manna and quail were given,
- Water came from a rock,
- The Amalekite army was defeated when Moses (with help) raised the staff of God during the battle,
- Just the sound of God talking to Moses was enough for the Israelites to put their trust in Moses, and
- No person or animal could touch the mountain God was on–nor could they even be touched after.
On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled. 17 Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain. 18 Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly. 19 And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder.
Exodus 19:16-19a, ESV, emphasis added
Take the time to re-read that and picture yourself as an Israelite. Talk about witnessing something 100% awe-inspiring and terrifying.
Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off and said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.” … The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.
Exodus 20:18-21, ESV
The examples of God’s sovereignty are many. This series of events in the first chapters of Exodus served as the foundation for the Isrealites throughout their entire history as God’s chosen people. Constantly, we will read that God tells them to remember the Exodus, remember these events, remember his sovereignty. Do. Not. Forget.
In the prior posts, we concentrated on God’s hand over the peoples at that time. Now, with a focus on the control He has over everything in the earth, we can rest assured that He is sovereign.
His hand is over everything. You can rest in that and have a sense of peace originate in your heart because you know Who God truly is and how His sovereignty is over every animal, every thing, and every person on the entire earth.
He is in control. He is sovereign.
