Wash and Dry and Be on Your Way

Originally, I began making laundry detergent with a recipe I found online. I was dead-set on a powdered version because I thought it cleaned better and was cheaper, except I found something better.

My initial sole reason prompting me to switch to liquid wasn’t until I was given these awesome glass bottles that I just had to use somehow!

I scoured the internet and found an easy and quick recipe to follow but my clothes kept coming out smelling meh. So I tweaked it a bit by adding EOs… except that I found I couldn’t add enough in for the clothes to retain that smell, at least not economically speaking.

Next option was adding the EOs to the dryer balls, because clothes that have zero smell kept triggering my brain to equate them with a repulsive musty smell… similar to the one that happens when you forget a load of laundry in the washing machine for 3 days and open it up to be smacked in the face with that offensive stench (speaking from recurrent experiences, sadly).

I found my answer. Almost. I had to tweak a recipe I found in order to add a smell that made me smile. I added my own custom labels to my glass jars, filled them up, and now I love looking at them all on the shelf.

I included links so you can instantly add what you don’t already have directly into your Amazon cart if you wish (at the time of this post, these were the best deals, but prices are subject to change at anytime, unfortunately). There is also a borax substitute below in case you prefer to not use it (can be touted in green circles as not that great). Also, at the bottom of the post is a download link so you can save and print this out yourself {FOR FREE}.

HINT #1: The best hint I can give you is to buy a handheld blender like the one I’ve listed below as your dedicated “DIY Blender” (not worrying about cleaning it to food grade standards once done). (Same advice for the measuring cups and funnels.) You can always try to hit up garage sales or thrift stores because they’re frequently found there as well.

HINT #2: The second best hint I can give you is to buy a bucket with a pour spout. I’ve done it multiple times with a five gallon Home Depot bucket and let me tell you it’s messy.

DIY Liquid Laundry Detergent

Supplies

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Add two inches of lukewarm-cold water to your bucket.
  2. Add 1/2 C Super Washing Soda.
  3. Add 1/2 C Borax (if you do not want to use Borax, replace the 1/2 C Borax with 1/2 C Baking Soda).
  4. Blend powders fully until no clumps are left.
  5. Fill up the bucket with water (temperature doesn’t matter).
  6. Add 3/4 C Castile Soap of your choice and blend again.
  7. Use the funnel to pour into your containers.

Notes for Use

  1. Shake well before using.
  2. An HE washer uses approximately 1/3 C per load. (To be honest, I shake and pour directly in my top loader without measuring.)
  3. Can use as stain remover (but I haven’t tried this yet).
