PSA: You are Fearfully and Wonderfully Made (Psalm 139-145)

PSA: You are Fearfully and Wonderfully Made (Psalm 139-145)

Who knows you best: a spouse, best friend, family member, or neighbor? We have all kinds of relationships in this life, but our deepest one is our best worldly example of what God’s relationship to us is like… except that there isn’t even a comparison. See, God starts at the very beginning knowing exactly who we are: our personalities, shapes, abilities, etc. Only He truly knows us and that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. YOU are fearfully and wonderfully made, do not ever forget that vital truth!

It is so relieving to know that the God who reigns over all and controls even the wind and the seas, He knows us inside out and still wants us to seek a relationship with Him.

all is lost

Everything about you…

There is nothing hidden from God. Considering that truth, it can either shake you or assure you.

Your place in this world is sovereignly controlled. You are intentional, God made YOU just the way you are for a reason! Psalm 139 walks us through these truths, that God knows us now, His guidance for us, His omnipresence/omnipotence, His design for each of us, the span of our days.

As a believer of the first 16 verses, the Psalmist, David, continues on to share about His omniscience and request to align completely with the things God loves and to root out that which doesn’t.

PSA: You are Fearfully and Wonderfully Made (Psalm 139-145)

God knows you personally…

O Lord, You have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

Psalm 139:1-4

As a Psalm of David’s, it is helpful to remember that he is living a life in righteous pursuit of displaying God’s glory and seeking Him first. The knowledge behind his approach to God is backed by his faith.

A blessing of the Bible is that we get to read the example of his life and realize we can mirror it.

That God would know the words we speak before they form on our tongues points us to see His overwhelming sovereignty. Satan can trick us by using our past but only God knows our thoughts, words, and heart!

God guides us personally…

You hem me in, behind and before, and lay Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.

Psalm 139:5-6

Again, this can either shake you or assure you. What is your viewpoint of God? Is it one of Him in sovereign control or is it of an overbearing tyrant? How you view God is essential to the Christian faith and your personal walk with Him–the Bible, the WHOLE Bible, presents us with an accurate and complete picture of Him. How we decipher it, if we choose to read, study, and learn about Him is on us.

Considering that He knows us personally, it brings great joy to know that He protects, guides, and leads us with knowledge that is unfathomable and unattainable by humans.

Nothing is hidden from God…

Where shall I go from Your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, You are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to You; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with You.

Psalm 139:7-12

We cannot flee from Him, our sins are ever before Him, and even darkness is but light to Him. What a sovereign God we serve!

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.

Galatians 6:7

This truth can be a great reminder for us as we traverse our days to point us to Him but also to keep us from sinning in secret. Nothing is hidden from Him and our lives should reflect this. God cannot be mocked, because he knows all.

God designed you…

For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in Your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

Psalm 139:13-16

All lives were created by Him and all are precious to Him. How amazing are these truths to realize that every single thing about us was pre-planned to create us just as we are.

God’s Creation story was amazing, but He continues that amazement on with the miracles of babies. Even before a day has been lived, God knows the length of them for each person. We are knit together by a sovereign God… YOU were knit together by a sovereign God. You are fearfully and wonderfully made!

Do you live for HIS glory?

A motto that should hold fast to every area in our lives… why not grab a daily reminder to boast of Our King!

Every life has been fearfully and wonderfully made…

Every life is precious to God, which means every baby is precious to God. We read here that God designed every single person individually; this was not by accident.

Did you know that a baby in the womb is actually treated by the woman’s body as though separate, it’s because it is a separate life that the woman’s body is able to nurture to be able to face the world outside of the womb. Did you know that if a pregnant woman gets in a car accident and dies, that it is considered two deaths?

May it be that Christians recognize this very basic truth that is rooted in our understanding of His sovereignty to see what our stance should be on abortion… that every life is fearfully and wonderfully made. Are we okay with the destruction of God’s workmanship?

Asking for wisdom…

How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with You.

Psalm 139:17-18

The Bible speaks often about God’s sovereignty with good reason. It builds our faith and our understanding of Who we serve. When we understand and fully accept it, it helps build our desire to ask for His wisdom because He knows everything! The depth of His omniscience (all-knowing) is something we cannot even fathom. His wisdom holds not a candle to even the wisest on this earth.

Yet, how often do we come to Him requesting He impart that to us or guide us with it?

Asking for protection…

Oh that You would slay the wicked, O God! O men of blood, depart from me! They speak against You with malicious intent; Your enemies take Your name in vain. Do I not hate those who hate You, O Lord? And do I not loathe those who rise up against You? I hate them with complete hatred; I count them my enemies.

Psalm 139:19-22

Does it look to you as though David haphazardly approaches God on a whim to throw out a request for help? Or does it look as though a believer recognizes the power of the God he serves, is committed to his God, and asks for protection?

Request to be more like Him…

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!

Psalm 139:23-24

The more you expand your understanding of who God is, the more it makes you desire to be like Him. David’s life displayed this well. Did he sin? Yes, and the Bible does not shy away from the details surrounding his most famous sin. His response to his choice to sin, when called out by a Godly leader, taught us what true repentance was.

David knew he was fearfully and wonderfully made because of who God was to him. It was a fundamental truth to him as he grew his faith.

Psalm 139 starts and ends with a request for God to search his heart, make him aware of anything that needed to be changed within him, and to guide him toward Heaven!

What a blessing it is for us to be able to use this example and pray the same for our own lives!
