What is a Prepper? | David was to Solomon as John the Baptist was to Jesus (1 Chronicles 15-21)

Do you have dried foods and water bottles tucked away safely in case of emergency? Have you looked at potential future possibilities and prepared accordingly? What is a prepper? A Biblical prepper was one who prepared the way for a future leader.

When you ask ‘what is a prepper’ an immediate line of thought for most leans toward crazy, overprepared, maybe on the verge of a conspiracy theorist. While I’m sure some ‘preppers’ might be those things, it is more likely that the vast majority have a logical mindset of looking at all possibilities and planning accordingly. Joseph would have been considered a prepper, yet he had a specific mission to prepare the Egyptians for a famine.

Family Bible Plan - What is a Prepper? | David was to Solomon as John the Baptist was to Jesus (1 Chronicles 15-21)

It’s never too late to start….

David was a prepper…

A Biblical prepper was one who prepared for the future; either for future leaders or events, often foretold by God. There were many preppers all throughout the Bible, preparing the way for what God had predetermined. Joseph was a prepper. David was a prepper. Joshua was a prepper. Esther was a prepper. Isaiah was a prepper. John the Baptist was a prepper. Jesus was a prepper. We are to be preppers.

David’s role was to be the start of a generational kingship but this was ESTABLISHED when his son, Solomon, became king. David had some major challenges to endure:

  • King Saul hated him with a passion for no reason and tried to kill him through almost his entire reign;
  • He was the King who fought battles to establish the Promised Land;
  • Becoming King was challenged by a dual ruler who wanted power;
  • At one point his own entire army wanted to kill him;
  • One of his sons raped one of his daughters; and
  • A different son took vengeance and then tried to usurp the throne.

He wanted to honor God with a solid concrete temple, but that was not his role. His lot in life held different realities; but his attitude is notable.

David’s role…

Similar to David, our hearts can be in the right place, but the role God has for us is different than what we expected. Click To Tweet

David had roles for his life, one-such role was to prepare for Solomon to establish the throne. He had the desire to build a temple, instead of keeping the Ark in a tent. His heart was in the right place. Similar to David, our hearts can be in the right place, but the role God has for us can be different than what we expected.

David had just brought up the Ark of the Covenant in a manner approved by God and was filled with praise for God’s role in their lives. Shortly after, when David went home and settled in his palace, he recognized the anomaly: he had a palace while the Ark was in a tent. It did not seem right to him; his heart was in the right place.

After David’s desire was confirmed by Nathan, God delivered a message to him through Nathan. What was David’s response? Was he bitter? Angry? Jealous? Sad? Withdrawn? Frustrated?

No.

He was humbled and grateful. Humbled that God had chosen him and his family while also expressing deep gratitude that God chose to share His plan with him. He follows this up with praise, a respectful desire for God’s promises to be fulfilled, and thankfulness that he serves Him!

There was a higher purpose…

David understood God’s message at a deeper level. See, God had promised to establish his throne, meaning that David’s line would continue the kingship. With the upset at the start of his reign with Solomon’s son, (2 Samuel 2-4) this was a big deal.

See, David’s role was to establish the Promised Land. If you’ll note, during his wars he collected plunder and tributes. These items were going to be used to establish the temple. The temple was going to be used to establish the line of David through Solomon (who would build the temple). The wisest man on earth built God a temple. If you look at Solomon’s clout and respect from all nations in the world at that time, you’ll see that this act ultimately pointed to the sovereignty and establishment of God for the world to see.

David prepared the country and the people for Solomon, who prepared the temple (where God dwelled), ultimately giving glory to God.

There was a deeper meaning…

As the entire Old Testament can be used to point us to the New Testament, so too, can this story. John the Baptist had a similar role to play as David. He was to follow through and complete the role that God ordained for him: to lead the way for Jesus.

John the Baptist prepared the people for Jesus, who prepared us for being temples where the Holy Spirit dwells (as well as being the stones of the temple that represents the church body), ultimately giving glory to God.

The story of David accepting his role points to a much bigger picture with a far deeper meaning.

What is a prepper? It has a far deeper meaning through a Biblical lens.
