Trust and Obey Scripture – They Go Hand in Hand for a Reason

The trust and obey scripture verses hammer home the necessity of this combination in our lives. It is not enough to trust. We MUST obey as well.

Trust and Obey Scripture - You can't have one without the other....

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Adam and Eve…

After the Creation account, the Bible starts off of with an understanding of God’s relationship with people on earth. He gave specific commands for their good; Adam and Eve were expected to listen and obey. They did not, and we find consequences enabled. This storyline repeats itself throughout the Bible.

In the Old Testament, we continuously find “if you pay close attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the Lord will [insert any of His covenant promises]”. Interesting to note, the covenant promises given are offered contingent on the Israelites’ obedience. We can learn from this that we have a role and duty to follow suit…. We also need to obey the laws and rules clearly laid out for us.

If this, then that…

“Listen to the terms of this covenant and tell them to the people of Judah and to those who live in Jerusalem. Tell them that this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘Cursed is the man who does not obey the terms of this covenant– the terms I commanded your forefathers….’ I said, ‘Obey me and do everything I command you, and you will be my people, and I will be your God. Then I will fulfill the oath I swore to your forefathers….'”

Jeremiah 11:2-5 (emphasis added)

The trust and obey scripture verses clearly lay out that listening and knowing are not enough, we have an obligation to live a specific and obedient lifestyle. Obedience, then, is a requirement of our faith. It proves our faith genuine when trust and knowledge are followed up by obedience.

For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

Romans 2:13

Submit fully to God…

Our actions MUST match our words. As our Pastor spoke on Sunday, you could spend 20 some years attending church, Bible studies, volunteering, reading the Bible, etc. but never have your heart truly aligned with God. The Holy Spirit will transform your entire life when you submit to God with obedience.

Together, let’s repent of our sins, turn to God, delve into His Word, and obey what He teaches.

But we never can prove
  The delights of His love,
Until all on the altar we lay;
  For the favor He shows,
  And the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.
