How Salty is Your Salt? There is a steep warning if you don’t have salty salt.

Alright, do you have salty salt? Quite salty, dulled a bit, really salty?

The Beatitudes make up some of the most talked about verses in the Bible. They delve into the trials we might face on earth and encourage us that our reward is coming, it is Heaven. Our eyes ought to be focused on the end goal in order to live righteously. All of Matthew 5 talks about the three different types of people in the world: the true Christians, the “Christians”, and the non-Christians.

The three types of people…

What is your salty salt level? There is a different level for the true Christian versus the 'Christian'. What might you lose out on living as a 'Christian'?

The non-Christians are clearly those who persecute. But in verses 13-48, it breaks down the difference of the true Christian versus the “Christian”. It is important to take note of the seriousness at what might be lost should you live your life as a “Christian”.

The one who is seeking to walk with the Lord and live rightly (Beatitudes) will be seeking to learn and obey the commands. Click To Tweet

Zipping backward in our Bibles to Psalm 119, the Psalmist requests God to (I’m paraphrasing here): not let him stray from His commands, teach him the decrees, open his eyes, do not hide His commands, and remove from him scorn and contempt. This ties in so wonderfully with the Beatitudes. The one who is seeking to walk with the Lord and live rightly (Beatitudes) will be seeking to learn and obey the commands. We find in Matthew that very guide for our hearts, how beautiful that God lays it out for us in His word!

The Dead Sea…

A lot of the salt originated from the Dead Sea; it was full of impurities and this is what caused their actual salt to lose its saltiness. The impurities in our own lives will be why we lose our saltiness. Click To Tweet

Interestingly, a lot of the salt originated from the Dead Sea. The salt was full of impurities and this is what caused their actual salt to lose its saltiness. This illustration brought them an immediate recognition of the reality. The impurities in our own lives will be why we lose our saltiness. “It is no longer good for anything….” They understood first-hand that saltless salt was useless for them. They wanted pure, salty salt.

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

Matthew 5:13, NIV

The impurities in our life are explained in Matthew 5, but then we are taught to understand that the law is really aimed at individual thoughts and motives–our hearts. Our lives truly ought to be about giving glory to God, if we have hidden ourselves away never seeing anyone and keeping the glorious gift of God secret, we are not being lights in this dark world; we are helping keep it dark. {I’ve also been tempted to run away and hide after we were burned by many people, and I did take a season of life to process what we had been through so I do get that; I failed to be a herald for my faith during that season though. Just remember, God gave us emotions and they’re a gift. Take the time to work through your feelings so you can also glorify God with your light during and after your healing.}

Pray for understanding so you can have salty salt…

So now let us, as the Psalmist did in Psalm 119, ask for God to open our eyes that we might understand the teachings in His word and how to live in a right relationship with Him, so we will be blessed throughout eternity with Him in Heaven.

  1. I didn’t realize that the Dead Sea salt had impurities that would make it lose its saltiness! Thank you for sharing that information and pointing out that we need to beware of impurities in our own lives.

  2. That verse on salt was in my Bible reading this morning, and I wondered more about it. Thanks for this insight! It makes better sense now. Also, thanks for linking up with us at #BVNetworkParty today! Many blessings!

  3. Thanks Becca! I love how Scripture refers to us salt, it’s such an interesting analogy! Thanks for the invite to your Pinterest group board and for linking up at InstaEncouragements!
